Eleanor Lutz has long been known in the scientific community for its maps and infographics. Most of them are devoted to biology, but recently she became interested in astronomy. On her website, called Tabletop Whale, she creates «Atlas of the Cosmos». Lutz has already drawn detailed pictures of the surface of the Moon, Venus and Mercury, as well as an interactive map of the seasons on Earth.

We have collected for you a gallery of some works by Eleanor Lutz.

Infographic is a metabolic map – a diagram of the chemical reactions that turns food into energy. The “galaxy of molecules” illustrates only a small fraction of the full metabolic map” – Eleonor Lutz

That’s 396 sketches total – probably the most complicated GIF I’ve made so far. I am a little sad that I wasn’t able to show size properly though. For example, the 24 week fetus is about 40 times heavier than a 12 week fetus (but you can’t tell that from this drawing). This is my last post for 2014″ – Eleonor Lutz.

“Landmarks on Venus are named after famous women or goddesses. I made a topographic map introducing the woman behind each name. You can find the full-size map here” –  Eleonor Lutz.

RE: «This map shows the orbit paths of over 18,000 asteroids in the solar system, including every single asteroid more than 10km in diameter, and all named asteroids in the Kuiper Belt.  Each asteroid is shown at its exact position on New Years’ Eve 1999, and all objects of known size are shown proportional to its actual size (using a log scale). Fun fact about this map – you might notice that Pluto is shown inside Neptune’s orbit. It turns out that about 10% of the time, Pluto is actually closer to the sun than Neptune. On 12/31/99 Pluto is further away, but it appears closer here because Neptune’s orbit tail reaches back in time to a point when it was closer to the Sun.
By the way, as for asteroids you can find out if your own name is an asteroid by searching. The map is made from open NASA data.» – Eleonor Lutz.
